Winter Solstice 2017

‘The Light shines in the darkness  and the darkness  has not overcome it”

The birth of the sun in the deeps of winter  represents the Universal Light born as a light in the deeps of the soul ; a light which grows and transforms the soul just as in nature  the growing light and heat of the sun stimulates transformation .

There is a tendency to want to hurry from autumn to spring, to avoid the long dark days that winter brings. Many of us don’t like constant days bereft of light and months filled with colder temperatures. We  struggle with the bleakness of land and the bareness of trees. Our eyes and hearts seek colour and light . Our  spirits tire of endless grey  cloudy skies. There is great rejoicing in the thought that light and warmth will soon be filling more and more of each new day.

But winter darkness has a positive side to it. As we gather to celebrate the first turn from winter to spring, let us remember and embrace the positive  enriching aspects of winter’s darkness.

I invite you to recognize and honor the subtle beauty in the often unwanted season of winter.

Let us invite our hearts to be glad for the courage that winter proclaims.

Let us be grateful for the wisdom winter brings in teaching us of the need for withdrawal and rest as an essential part of renewal.

Let us also encourage our spirits as Earth prepares to come forth from this time of withdrawal into a season filled with light.

In these dark days of December we look forward to the  returning of the light. At this winter solstice all is still…the weeks leading up to this most interior time are paradoxically the busiest of the year as people prepare  for celebrations  at the season when gathering darkness gives way to increasing light.

Celebrations honouring the winter solstice as a moment of transition and renewal date back thousands of years and occur among many peoples on every continent.

The Winter Solstice is a time of quietude,. . All around us the season seems to reach a standstill — a point of repose. We  celebrate the return of hope as our planet experiences the first slow turn toward greater daylight. We celebrate the life that lies dormant at this time but with the turning of the year begins to  grow again, to grow towards the light.

May we too  allow the  light  to grow within us in response to the Infinite  Divine Light who draws us  towards living lives of abundant life and light and love,  free of fear and limitation.

 So be it.
